What is the IP Address of this computer?

Well, an easy question. You can see the IP address of this computer in the text below. Problem solved! But how do I find the IP address on my computer and what is an IP? Ok, let’s see if we can answer these questions!

How do you know my IP Address?

I really don’t want to upset you, but surfing anonymous is not one of the best things on the Internet. Every time you visit a website, your IP (Internet Protocol) address travels with it and is registered as a visitor of the site. This is for security-reasons in case of spamming or hacking. For this site, we only use the IP Addresses for statistics and for the authorities in case of spamming or hacking.

The IP Address of this computer is:

38.107.179.242

What is an IP Address?

The Internet is really big. At this very moment (febr. 2012) there are nearly 2.400.000.000 (2,4 billion!!!) Internet users in the world. According to other statistics, ‘only’ 27% of the world population has access to the Internet. Can you imagine now how huge this is, and what will happen in the future when more and more people can use Internet?

An IP Address is like a post-address: When you send a letter you write on the back of the envelope where it came from, so the receiver can reply. Same for computers: When this computer makes a request for a search at Google, the IP Address of this computer is attached. Like this, the search results will come back on this computer. Every computer in the world has a unique IP Address. Until recently the Internet used IP Addresses that looked like this: 172.16.254.134. This is called an IPv4. But due to the huge amounts of internet-devices, all the combinations of the IPv4-format are nearly gone. That is why a new format is introduced. It is called IPv6 and it looks like this: 2001:db8:0:1234:0:567:8:1. This format can create nearly uncountable combinations.
